Greek Musical Instruments
The Greeks believed that music nurtured man’s relationship with the gods and as a result many of their popular myths feature instruments. For example the lyre (a distant relative of the harp and panpipes (cane tubes arranged in scale) were allegedly created by the gods.
Music and dance are a major part of Greek culture. In ancient times it was studies in school along with reading, writing and public speaking. Plato and Aristotle were supporters of music education and wrote of the importance of music in society.
Along with singing and clapping, the Greek people have since early times used every available combination of instruments to provide the musical accompaniment for their singing and dancing. Some of the most popular instruments include oud, laouto, tamboura, bouzouki and baglama.
