String Instruments → Dulcimer

There are several varieties of dulcimer: mountain dulcimer, american hammered dulcimer, and persian hammered dulcimer. The hammered dulcimer is played by striking the strings with small hammers, with the dulcimer resting either on the lap or on a table or stand. The mountain dulcimer is played by strumming the strings with the fingers or a pick.

Hammered Dulcimer, 10/9 Rosewood
SKU: DH10-9R
The Hammered Dulcimer has a beautiful, rich, full sound. The percussive sound of the mallets (or hammers) on the strings creates an energy that is not found in other string instruments. This particular hammered dulcimer is a 10/9 which means there are 10 strings crossing the treble bridge on the left, and 9 strings crossing the bass bridge on the right. The recommended tuning is Traditional Fifth Interval Tuning.

The Hammered Dulcimer soundboard is made of solid lacewood which includes one rosewood rosette over the soundhole. The rosette features an intricate vine and leaf pattern. The pin blocks, rails, and back are made of rosewood; the back has a carrying handle opening. The strings have a 1 inch spacing, and are tuned with the included T shaped tuning tool. The lacewood bridges have color coded saddles to make the instrument just a little easier to play. Also included is one pair of two sided dulcimer hammers. The heart shaped hammers are lacewood with rosewood trim, and they have a leather pad on one side to create a softer sound. Made in Pakistan.

Wildwood Dulcimer, Lacewood
SKU: DMWL
Fun, lightweight, and easy to play, our Wildwood Dulcimer has the rich sound of a mountain dulcimer with just a little bit of banjo twang. The body style of the Wildwood allows it to be played like a guitar instead of the traditional "flat in the lap" position of the mountain dulcimer. The teardrop spruce soundboard with three rosettes stands out in contrast to the long, thin rosewood fingerboard. Choose between a dark rosewood or a creamy lacewood back. Made in Pakistan.

The Wildwood has three string courses: a wound string at the top, an unwound center string, and two unwound strings tuned in unison, at the bottom. Many tunings will work, but we recommend the traditional DAD to makes it easy to pick up and play. The frets are arranged in a diatonic scale, just like an Appalachian mountain dulcimer, but added is the infamous 6 1/2 fret just below the octave position allowing play in Ionian mode. The possibilities are many, playing the Wildwood Dulcimer can be as easy or as complicated as your care to make it. Explore!

Special Note: The strings put on the instruments in our workshops, while playable, are put through some rigorous testing. They should probably be replaced for improved playability, sound quality, and better tuning shortly after you receive the instrument.
