The Hugh Tracey TM Karimba comes with African tuning. The octaves and 5th intervals are the same as the western intervals, but the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, and 7th are all flat from the western major intervals by varying degrees, while the 4th is a bit sharp. This tuning is best when the karimba is played solo, with other similarly-tuned karimbas, or with percussion. This is the native tuning as the instrument comes from Africa. The notes don't fall on the exact western intervals. The TM Kalimba is shaped like the AMI (African Musical Instruments) trademark, which is also the shape of some traditional kalimbas from Africa. 17 Keys. The karimba is similar to the mbira from Zimbabwe. It has 17 tines organized in two rows, but at first glance the organization isn't logical. However, as you begin to play, you find that the inherent logic of this instrument lets you sound like a traditional African musician! Traditionally used in ceremonies to speak with one's ancestors in Shona ceremonies, this instrument has a lot of soul built into it. Made in Africa.
